Mercedes w116 450SEL 6.9 with camera rig

French film director Claude Lelouch’s nine-minute film Rendezvous is a legend among car enthusiasts. The legend has it that one very early morning in August of 1976, he affixed a then new gyroscopically stabilized 8mm camera to the front of his Ferrari 275 and tore through Paris at high speed without stopping, running several red lights in the process. He was reportedly arrested when it was first publicly shown, and rumours were rampant about who had been driving (including the possibility of Formula 1 drivers). (more…)

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

This is an entirely impressive bit of driving from the Isle of Man Rally (AKA Manx Rally) that reaffirms the idea that rally driving is some of the most demanding and impressive driving there is. Driver Patrick Snyers threads the car with consummate precision, even pulling on a young Collin McRae (RIP). Check out how the rear bias on the brakes (used to induce slides) gets the car so squirrely under braking in a straight line. The fast and narrow tarmac stages leave little margin for error and the level of vehicle control is accordingly high.
